Introducing WBC Women’s Boxing Club.
When Nicola Adams became the first woman to box in the Olympics London 2012 for GB, she won the gold medal. At the same Olympics Ireland’s Katie Taylor made History by winning Gold. Making her the greatest sports woman ever in Ireland. 1 olympic Gold, 5 World Amateur championships Gold, 6 European Golds and 5 European Union Amateur Golds. Since then, there has been a rise of women getting more involved in the sport. And why should there not be, anyone can box and that’s what we at WBC promote.
Jason Lowe and Mav Akram set up WBC in November 2014. They now continue to run this at at Community Aero Kick gym in Digbeth, Birmingham. In 2018, they expanded and run additional sessions from a second gym in Energie Fitness in Sheldon. In April 2015 the club was ‘Voted Number One’ by Box Nation, in September 2016 won ‘Club of the Year’ at The Birmingham Sports Awards, in November 2018 won ‘Community Club of the Year’ by Sport Birmingham, in June 2019 won ‘Club of the Year, by Birmingham Prestige Awards and most recently won ‘Sporting Initiative of the Year 2019 by Birmingham Awards. The Club has in the 6 year period of operating been boosted by 35 world champions such as Katie Taylor, Nigel Benn, Joe Calzaghe, Ray Mancini and Anthony Joshua.
WBC was set up as a platform to get women more involved with boxing and keeping fit.
It’s all about every individual woman who attends, you get the opportunity to lose weight, keep fit and have fun. You set yourself realistic goals with an amazing sense of achievement. We are a motivational and empowering boxing club.
If you box you are a risk taker. If you are a woman and you box you are a risk taker and a rule breaker. Boxing is like a victorious repossession of strength for a woman, a more mature claim to womanhood. Who says high heels and a deadly left hook are contradictory?
